Gregory's Bed-Sitting Room Mix

This mixtape was created for you by Gregory Lowry, a man of impeccable taste, not only in music, but also film and literature ... Those of you who frequent Bottletree Cafe may know Greg as the extremely bright & witty conversationalist bartender that he is there ... In that sense, I was actually pretty surprised by the mood of this particular playlist, which is wonderfully soft and slightly sad, but somehow also very celebrational in its own right ...

It is definitely the most emotional and sentimentally beautiful mix to hit the Psychic Tuesday airwaves ... It's impossible to listen to it without your heartstrings being yanked every which a way and you're left feeling as if you've just watched a total tear-jerker movie where you were the main character ... Yes, it's that epic!

So get out yer Kleenex, cuz HERE it comes!

Thanks a ton, Greg!!!

****************************************************************************

Phew!!! What a full week this was!

Last Psychic Tuesday, I helped Walker make another crazy promo for his upcoming show in Montevallo Al at Grey Gables & Eclipse. Viewing it will not only make you realize just how much of a lunatic I can be, but you'll see the restless "film-maker seed" in Walker stirring and starting to grow, which is pretty fascinating ... Maybe this music career thing is actually just a diving board to a promising future as a movie director ... who knows?

Witness the lunacy:

That night, Bad News Bearons played our 1st game in a month (5 cancelled games!) and although we ended up losing, it was an amazing good time, probably because we were all just so excited and happy to actually be playing again!

The best part for me that nite was that I not only caught my 1st fly-ball at a game, but I also performed my 1st slide into 2nd and that confused the baseman so he missed the catch and I hauled ass to 3rd! haha ...

After the game I got another surprise when my team started throwing drinks on me and chanting "MVP! MVP!" I didn't know what this meant so I started getting irritated (!) ... Justin came up and whispered "It means Most Valuable Player!" which made me smile and blush ... What a great evening and what a sweet team I'm on ...

****************************************************************************

So continuing on the "full week" theme, Wednesday I picked up one of my best friends in the world, John Wendel from the airport ... He's visiting the states from Korea where he teaches English ...

Marion Payne Jones took this photo of John & I at Barehands Gallery:

John was also kind enough to help me the next day on my bi-monthly paper deliveries ... I'd never had anybody help me before, but it proved to be the most incredibly fun delivery day ever:

It really gave us a good chance to catch up and for me to "train" John to do something he'll never do again! haha! Just dig the name of this realty company ... I think they'd probably get a lot more business if they simply changed their name! haha

****************************************************************************

The rest of the week was spent panicking and slaving over finishing all of the paintings for my "Black Sheep" show at Crestwood Coffee Company ... which finally happened Friday ... I hung everything Saturday morning and went straight home afterwards to completely & impulsively
SHAVE MY HEAD! I guess I just really felt like I needed a change ...

The black sheep has been shorn!!!

To my relief, Ryan likes the new look ... something I totally fretted about right before the opening reception!

Speaking of the opening reception, take a look at some of the photos I posted on my News blog.

Also, fellow artist Chris Garrsion was kind enough to promote the show on his Salty Ham Jam blog ... Thanks, Chris!!!

I was very happy and thankful for all the folks who turned up for my opening ... Greg (who made this week's mix) claims that it is my best work so far ... cheers!

RYAN and his friends Jennifer & Sarah made it to the as well ... it all went very smoothly ... I even sold a painting! haha ...

****************************************************************************

Speaking of Ryan, we got to spend a radiant Sunday together at the Cahaba river ...

Here's some photographic evidence:

****************************************************************************

Hey folks, it's video time!

For some odd reason, watching this new one from El Guincho gives me de javu:

Ryan & I were listening to Ariel Pink on the way home from the river and it made remember how silly the video for this song is:

Ryan loves this ... it's pretty precious:

Doug posted this on facebook ... it's pretty cool and he did the music for it (thanks, Doug!) :

I kind of don't know what to say about this one by Janka Nabay except for "I dig it" :

This one by Minks is great and creepy and sad and beautiful:

Wow ... Jonsi provided the soundtrack for this amazing paint commercial:

And now for a TRIPLE DOSE of dessert! This week's specialty is Offensive Surprises! Get ready!!!

John Wendel turned me onto this ... most of it is just wrong, but still funny as hell (thanks, John!) :

Steve Lowry posted this on facebook (thanks!!!) and it's pretty bizarre (and hilarious) :

This is also a facebook post, this time by Todd Pierce (cheers!) and it really makes me laugh and laugh ... ENJOY! :

So the big news is that I have this new art show opening up Saturday, July 10th (4 - 7P) at Crestwood Coffee Company called "Black Sheep" ...

To be perfectly honest, I actually made this playlist specifically to be played at the opening ... not only does it sort of indirectly "explain" some of the pieces and the theme of the show, but the paintings themselves were actually titled after either the titles of some of the songs or some of the songs' lyrics ... so there you have it! Try to come out and we'll hang out and all that! haha

Here is the flyer I threw together for the event:

And here is a very tiny "sneak peak" of the show:

Come to Crestwood Coffee THIS COMING SATURDAY to see the entire show!!!

************************************************************************

On a completely different note, my softball team, Bad News Bearons have been suffering from a terrible streak of bad luck ... I'm not talking about losing games (that's nothing new! haha), I'm talking about 5 games in a row being CANCELLED either because of rain, thunder & lightning or from the other team for one reason or another forfeiting (which means a win for us, but still!) ... we have not played a game in a month now!!! AAAAARGH!

Anywaaaay, so we're SUPPOSED to play tonite (at George Ward Park field 3, 8:30P) IF we're lucky enough! Please light a candle and pray to who/whatever you worship and help break the curse! No joke! We wanna play ball SOOOO BAD!!!

*knock on wood!*

In other news, Walker got on a cool radio show recently ... Here's his mom, Jess Marie to tell ya all about it:

Walker was interviewed by Antjuan Oden for his radio show, Telepathic Opera, on Pirate Cat Radio the other night. Antjuan had him play a couple tunes live over the phone. Walker told me later they were both improvised. If you want to skip straight to his music; the first one is at about 1hr 14min into the show (its pretty straight forward electronic noise) and the second one (fairly structured rock-n-roll improv) is at about 1hr 22min.

http://podcasts.dreamhosters.com/pcr/TelepathicOpera/TelepathicOpera-20100627.mp3

The whole show is 2 hours long and quite good with other guests like the swell band, Dust Bowl Revival, and some good dj'ng. Antjuan talks to Walker for a little bit at the beginning and then again after about an hour or so. BTW, Telepathic Opera is one of many great shows on Pirate Cat Radio: http://www.piratecatradio.com/playlist.php?dj=TelepathicOpera

(If you do not know Walker Yancey, then I am sending you this as an introduction. He is my 14 yr old artist/musician son. If you were around mono09pod about a decade ago, he was the little fellow running and jumping about. and now...: http://www.myspace.com/difyrtasgsound)

ENJOY!

And Walker's amazing older sister, Eva just graduated from highschool (congrats, Eva!), so on the 4th of July, a lot of us got together down in Montevallo at Clare Vance's to celebrate Eva's brilliance and our country's independence (and all that) ...

It ended up being a fantastically exciting weekend ... once again RYAN and I were reunited, which of course made everything sparkle and shine even brighter ... And Clare's backyard has a gate that leads to a winding path through some magical woods to the most rad swimming creek ever ...

So swimming was the 1st thing on the agenda ... And look! I helped Ryan line this awesome rock with shells ... it sort of looks like a dragon's back ... I dubbed it the Great Wall of Shell ... Ryan took a nice photo of it:

Oh yeah and Carrie and Codi made this uber-cool cake to congratulate Eva ... whoa:

They, along with Dylan also made these really astonishing Japanese-type "creek lanterns" out of warped records and glittery candles and at twilight they set all 10 of them in the water and lit them ... I wish it I could have photographed them, but it was sort of impossible to capture their true beauty, so you'll have to just imagine how stunning the whole thing looked ...

There were also fireworks aplenty along with bottle rocket and roman candle wars ... What would Independence Day be without all that?!

Here's Devin swirling sparks all over the yard:

Speaking of sparklers, here's a pretty epic photo of Ryan:

Here's Nick and Acijro about to make all Hell break loose:

Here's all Hell breaking loose:

And here's Ryan once again making my heart skip a beat ... sigh ...

Loads of videos for you again this week:

1st up is this mess-of-a-video for the Suckers song "Black Sheep" which is actually on this week's mix:

Doug Baulos posted this wonderful nugget via Hin Dilen (thanks!!!) :

My god I love this new one from The Books, "Cold Freezin Night":

And here's one from my current favorite musician, Julian Lynch:

I truly love this song:

Elise sent me this incredible Tobacco video (thanks, Elise!) :

And now ... Some oldies but goodies ...

Peter Gabriel (with Kate Bush on guest vocals!) :

This one's for Ryan:

Speaking of Ryan ... He also likes this ... haha:

Brian Rich sent me this absolute diamond of a video (thanks, Brian!!!) :

And for dessert, Matt Whitson posted this (thanks!) and stated the following about it:

"I didn't make this. The lion at the end of the ad brings up the moral of the song - listen to what he has to say, kids."

Orange + Green Mixes

These mixtapes were created for you by Ryan Hora & myself ... well, sort of ...

We "originally" made them for eachother, but they got all shuffled and mixed up and switched around so now you have 2 different definitive Ryan & Paul (Paul & Ryan) mixes, each one named for our favorite colors (you get to guess who's is who's) ...

Btw, it's not only the 1st time in Psychic Tuesday history that collaborative mixes are being presented, but it's also the 1st time that 2 mixes have landed on the same day!

Now that's something to celebrate! haha

So here is the ORANGE MIX ...
&
here is the GREEN MIX ...

ENJOY!!!

**********************************************************************

Well, 1st off, I need to admit that lately I indeed feel very lucky ... not only to have someone like Ryan, but also to be a member of such an incredibly bad-ass softball team as the Bad News Bearons ...

come out to George Ward TONITE!!! We have a DOUBLEHEADER !!!

Most recently I feel truly lucky that a new brewery in town, Avondale Brewing Company are having me not only design their logo, but also designing each one of their different beer labels!

Whaaaaat?!!

I even got to sample some of their IPA yesterday evening and it was nothing short of phenomenal!

The future looks bright indeed ...

**********************************************************************

Next up, Peter and I's yard got a "haircut" ... which coincides nicely with the complete shaving off of my beard to celebrate Summer ... whoopee!!!

Technically, our realty company is supposed to cut the grass ... I guess they forgot to or SOMETHING cuz it slowly but surely turned into a very Addams Family type yard ... and Peter and I are both deathly allergic to poison ivy, which grows rampant in both the front and back yards, so ... um ... HELL NO we weren't touching it!

Anywaaaaay, a few days ago we suddenly found this official note on our door saying that Alabama Power was going to do some "vegetation maintenance" (!) on our yard ...

and they did! Thanks, Alabama Power! Now maybe we can qualify for the Southside Beautification award ...

Witness these Before & After photos:

After=

**********************************************************************

And holy shit this past weekend was GREAT! I got to spend 3 whole days with Ryan and his amazing friends in Montevallo ...

There was creek swimming, fireflies, beer drinking, full moons, junk store adventures, long and crazy "deep" conversations, music nonstop, actually fun porch-cleaning (!) and just a perfect feeling of synchronicity the entire time

... sigh ...

Here's Jennifer, Weston & Ryan fresh from an epic creek swim:

Here's Ryan's unbelievably charming kitty, Nico:

And here's Ryan himself plus me:

**********************************************************************

Oh yeah! I've been working on a July art show called "Black Sheep" at Crestwood Coffee Company ... Try to make it to the opening ... it'll be Saturday July 10th ...

**********************************************************************

HOLY SMOKE!!! ... get ready for an absolute onsalught of videos ...

I can't get over how great this song ("Nature Boy") is ... and Nat King Cole is pretty damn hypnotic in this performance as well:

I'm still swooning over Wild Nothing's new album, "Gemini" ... and here's a nice live version of a song from it ("Summer Holiday") :

May I now present to you 4 very creepy-themed videos ...

1. Crystal Castles create graveyard mania:

2. Medieval nightmares, compliments of Woods:

3. NSFW!!! adventures from Tobacco:

4. And a bizarrely sexy drug-riddled tale by Interpol:

Walker turned me onto these guys ... wish they were still kickin out the jams:

Ah, Jonsi ... yer fashion (AND music) is beyond compare:

Stuart posted this great performance by The Box Tops (thanks, Stuart!) ... I dig how totally UNserious they're taking themselves:

Charlie (Sanders) posted this(thanks, Charlie!) ... love it:

Going through Ryan's music, I now have a deep appreciation for what Adam & The Ants were doing in the late 70's:

The next video is not only hilarious, but an entire documentary film was shot, using it as a "diving board" ... behold the infamously foul-mouthed Winnebego Man (thanks, Candice!)

(word: Bottletree will actually be screening it TONITE!!!)

And for dessert, Keith posted a rather tasty treat with a surprise ending (wait for it!) haha ... thanks, Keith!!!
