In the 1980's, the band R.E.M. encapsulated (at least for some) a dual sense of Southern pride and mystery ... Before their album Out Of Time was released in 1991, the band still seemed to be sort of a Southern 'best kept secret' and both their songs and persona were things to marvel and guess at.
This compilation attempts to gather together R.E.M.'s more intriguing compositions. In a sense, before 1991, R.E.M. were simply a very different band than what they eventually came to be identified as.
Their 1980's songs were just as simultaneously ephemeral, playful and poetic as the first weeks of Autumn, a sudden thunderstorm, an old photograph or the driving, unexplainable allure of an abandoned house.
