This month (February '13) we appropriately focus on phenomenal shoegaze pioneers, My Bloody Valentine.
My Bloody Valentine's saturated music pleasantly drowns in a sea of distortion, pitch bending, and reverb. There's a rush of feeling inside of it so intense it creates a kind of paralysis. Their songs swirl and move in and out of phase, voices float by, half memory and half anticipation, and you're never quite sure how all the parts fit together.
Their seminal 1991 album "Loveless", which took nearly two years to make, remains iconic. Following "Loveless", My Bloody Valentine became inactive, with leader Kevin Shields rumored to have recorded - and shelved - several albums' worth of songs.
22 years later (!!!!), the follow-up to "Loveless" has finally been released (a little over a week ago, actually). Titled simply "mbv", it proves to be a seamless transition from its "flawless" predecessor.
I 've never been able to slap a label on their sound. "Shoegaze" never really seemed to fit for me (or do it justice). Neither old-fashioned nor modern, My Bloody Valentine stand apart, out of time.
As always,
***ENJOY***
