Focal Point : Doldrums

Hurrah! It's finally March!
And this month, Psychic Tuesday is focusing onthe amazing soundz of Doldrums, a musical venture created by Montreal artist, Airick Woodhead.

Ryan and I saw Doldrums open up for Bear In Heaven at Bottletree a little over a year ago, and we've been listening to his stuff on Soundcloud ever since ...

"As a part of a larger community reacting to the over-hype, plasticity of modern youth culture and it’s ultimately alienating nature, his music deals with, or helps him deal with, the loss of the individual in an increasingly altruistic society. Doldrums' music reflects this societal change on the personal level, as a member of the last generation to remember life pre-internet and 24-hour status updates. His androgynous voice comes across mid-panic attack, floating in a sea of chopped up samples, disembodied vocals and tribal percussion."

"Woodhead, whose falsetto hangs high over his songs, sounding at once like Siouxsie Sioux and Avey Tare-- grew up surrounded by folk thanks to his musician father. By the time he was a teenager, he was experimenting with making sounds in his basement. '[My dad] would be recording a folk album and I'd take all the drums and speed them up 100 times, and then just make some noise.' "

Following a few stellar EP's, Doldrums' debut album "Lesser Evil" was just released a week ago and he's about to be touring for the next few months.

If you wanna learn even more about Doldrums, HERE is an excellent AdHoc interview.
