Ethiopiques

Éthiopiques is a musical compilation series featuring recordings by Ethiopian and Eritrean singers and musicians from the 1960s and 1970s. Parts of the series focus on traditional music, while others highlight individual musicians or specific styles.

Ethiopian music uses a distinct modal system that is pentatonic, with characteristically long intervals between some notes. As with many other aspects of Ethiopian culture and tradition, tastes in music and lyrics are strongly linked with those in neighboring Eritrea, Somalia, Djibouti and Sudan.

This series contains an overwhelming 30 albums, of which only 15 I've heard. This particular play list not only gives the listener a sampling of the overall Ethiopiques series, but also it allowed me a chance to sift through it and showcase what I consider to be its standouts and highlights.

As always,

*** ENJOY ***
