This week we focus on The Books, who were a band whose music's been repeatedly described as "collage music" ... I am constantly intrigued by and fascinated with the concept of collage ... Some of my favorite examples of the art form are the amazing paintings of abstract expressionist, Robert Rauschenberg, the intriguing tape collages of composer John Cage and the mysterious pastiche music of The Focus Group ...
The Books fall perfectly alongside these other "collagists" ... They were a New York City duo consisting of guitarist and vocalist Nick Zammuto and cellist Paul de Jong. Their releases typically incorporate samples of obscure sounds and speech.
The Books are commonly cited by critics to be of a genre of their own. Their music usually consists of acoustic instrumentation of folk melodies usually played on guitar, cello, banjo and more, combined with a diverse range of samples obtained from cassettes found in thrift stores, which are digitally processed and edited.
Paul de Jong described The Books sound as "the new folk music... we make our own instruments, use our own libraries of sound bites while trying to create something universally human."
As always ...
