Focal Point : Coil

This month's edition of the Focal Point series sheds some light on a rather obscure, yet extremely important music force, the British group Coil.

Coil were truly unique in every sense of the word. They extracted beauty from the deepest, darkest and most unpredictable places. Their music can be described as dark, cross-genre, experimental, satanic, frightening, psychotic and sadly beautiful all in the same breath.

Their motto was "Ritual music for the accumulation of male sexual energy."
Their songs were filled with unashamed homosexuality.
They were brutally honest about their pagan beliefs.

Evil to John Balance and Peter Christopherson was not evil ... To them it was merely a "game you play for special conscience-raising rituals." Coil were on a mission, not only to challenge themselves musically, but to create music that truly challenged their listeners.

They cared very little about their image. They were more of a visionary band, aiming to unleash unknown and unexplored inner energies, thus encouraging those listening to unleash and explore their own unique, inner energies, even if what came out was uncontrollable, unfamiliar and terrifying.

Delirium and self-induced madness were their inspirational tools ... John Balance believed that by using such things and applying them, one could strengthen one's self instead of bringing harm.
