Focal Point : Grass Widow

As you may or may not know, each month Psychic Tuesday spotlights a musician or band that, for one reason or another, remains obscure, underrated and deserving of so much more attention than they've been given.

This is more or less what the "Focal Point" series is all about. It doesn't matter if the band or musician is brand new or was around many years ago. Some music simply NEEDS to be heard!

August's focal point, Grass Widow is one of those bands.
I love Grass Widow's sound. It is truly original. I find myself wanting to separate all of the instruments as well as separating all of the vocals, but everything is so seamlessly intertwined, interwoven together. They also sound sort of timeless ... You just have to hear it and experience it to know what I'm going on about!

Hailing from San Francisco, Grass Widow [Hannah Lew (bass, vocals), Raven Mahon (guitar, vocals), and Lillian Maring, (drums, vocals) ] write their hypnotic layered melodies collaboratively. Their haunting songs, rich in metaphor and couched in reference and allusion, are mined from the personal narratives of each. Vocal duties shared equally all around complete the overall sensibility. Grass Widow has no front person but offers a fresh musical experience not based on celebrity or spectacle.

Take a look at the grass Widow site RIGHT HERE.

As always, ENJOY!
And now ...
GRASS WIDOW!!!

>>>>RANDOM NEWS<<<<<

1st up, my "Silent Majority" art opening at Lowe Mill in Hunstville AL was very surreal, but also really fun, exciting and very unpredictable!

This was my view right before I headed into Huntsville:

So I knew not to expect too many folks ... anyway ... I set up my "mad tea party" ...

and my "products" ... and hoped for the best ...

The rains came pouring and the winds howled! A good deal of folks showed up and I $old some Tshirts, one painting and then BOOM! The lights went out! And STAYED out! Crazy! The rest was like a weird dream ... folks looking at my paintings with cellphone light, meeting people and not being able to see their faces ... madness!

Thanks to my Huntsville friends, Tim and Renee (being the wonderfully hospitable life savers that they are! THANKS!!!), I had a place to stay that night ... Lowe Mill had an art sale the next day, so I returned and $old more Tshirts and 3 more paintings! Yay!

Next up was the incredible High Five Fest at Birmingham's own Bottletree where my band Nowhere Squares had a blast playing a lot of new songs!

Also, (this is AWESOME!) the same night as the opening, the newest episode of Nickelodeon's "Figure It Out!" aired and it stars Elise's 13 year old son, Nolan!!!

Witness the mania (and slime!!!)

You can watch Nolan on "Figure It Out!" below ... He's such a natural!
(His segment starts at 12:14)

In other news, the "Tea Party" has taken over AL Public Television which is pretty horrible. Check it out HERE. I sincerely hope this changes in the near future!!!

If you're a fan of the incredible group, Dead Can Dance (who just started a world tour!) HERE is an excellent recent interviewwith them!

Speaking of interviews, check out this one with David Lynch which is mostly about his mind-blowing first feature length film, "Eraserhead". It lies HERE.
